costume portrait day

This Wednesday I helped a little in the Costume Portrait day which is an even run by the university's ASEAN Society and Life-drawing society. Check out thier blog.
Its a really fun event where sitters pay to be drawn by student artists. The sitters can wear crazy accessories like wigs, sunglasses, and masks. After the session the drawings can be bought. The blog explains it better than I do.
Anyways, I enjoyed it.

The sitters were very fun to draw- you could see  they felt like a rock stars. With ridiculous wigs.

I realized how much I miss Life Drawing, despite being one of the students who help run the society.
Thanks Natan and ASEAN society.

Past and Present

I like outdoing myself. Someone reminded me of my rock girl illustrations I did eons ago. It was a spontaneous and pleasant surprise. As I didn’t draw it on the right paper, they didn’t scan well but I might as well show them;

So I'm working on better versions of them.
Along with that there were some old Ancient Egyptian drawings I did.

These were done before Photoshop (those dark days) so I used ArtRage™ which has similar features and interesting tools.
I don't know if the stripes of color work.

Production, Movies, Madness

Still working on our film, its looking good. Managed to squeeze some time on Friday for  Sofia Cappola’s Marie Antoinette (cupcakes, costumes and cinematography!) while watching it I was sketching and referencing from a book of historical fashion.

These don't represent a specific era (I think) but was a lot of fun to draw.

'Got tissues for your issues?'

Another sketch from this week, its hay fever season.

More jellyfish ladies

Been a busy week of production, early bed and excessive consumption of Muller yogurt. Again, playing with watercolors, creating mermaid jellyfish weirdness.

Not the most convincing fish, if you can spot it- i tried

Bittersweet

Work in progress- playing with Photoshop.
This will be towards a series I'll probably make into cards. Was thinking of family and friends going through a hard time at the moment (the bitter) Did this while watching glimpses of the Royal Wedding (hence the sweet)
I adored the wedding dress.

Sketch

My messy sketch, playing with watercolors.  Trying to figure out how why this image appears different from my laptop compared to the iMacs at college.
When I was watching Glee last week I saw the rendition of Kesha's 'Tik Tok' , I wanted to do a watercolor illustration of this. I like Heather Morris (who plays Brittany) as a dancer.
Looking to invest on good watercolor paper.

True Grit

Half watched the 1969 'True Grit' this weekend. I liked the character of Mattie and the simple attire  she wore (accredited to the costume designer Dorothy Jenkins)

Spring/Summer

I think we can all agree that this spring heatwave makes us feel like we are in July.
There are some really cool outfits in town;

 I hope to start/continue sketches because I have been feeling a little like this;
Well, not really.
Have a lot to deal with at the moment.

I follow rivers

This has been an ongoing project. I just had to respond to this song. Its called 'I follow rivers' by Lykke Li. Its haunting, yet very beautiful. I love it. And I tried to illustrate it,

Used Biro, scanned and painted in Photoshop
I had made several designs in Photoshop (about 15) before I was sort of happy with this one:
This is how I pictured the illustration to be, but I feel it doesn't work
Keeping it simple.

Lykke Li wasn't available to sit for the drawing, so I used a photograph by Daniel Jackson (can't access his website, but Google him)
Working on this illustration has somehow kept me sane for these past weeks. Its a personal project, but I'm happy to show it.

Saw the music video- directed by Tarik Saleh, for the first time today. Really good.  Somehow similar to how I imagined it.

Adebanji Alade

Its been a month and a while since I posted in this blog.

This is because I'm reconsidering the artistic direction I'm taking for this blog (too many strange hairs and jellyfish ladies). And also because of the big final year film we have been working hard on. Its not directed by me, but my super talented colleague.
Anyways I had time to take a workshop facilitated by the Fine Art Collective taught Mr Alade. I've been a fan of Adebanji Alades art and you can see why on his blog and website.

The workshop was called 'Drawing in the Tube', involving drawing people in the tube.
As an animator, drawing people in public is fundamental but its not something I do regularly. Which is why I took this workshop.
We learned plenty. I loved watching Alade sketch. He did one of me:

Art by Adebanji Alade

Isn't it amazing(ly real)?

sunday space girl

An attempt at digital painting, not perfect but I'm happy with what I could do.

This week's sketch

Ever since seeing tiny porcelain figurines of beach bathers, I've been sketching little figures.

Been busy

Its been ages! Well, its been weeks and some serious changes are needed in this blog. (I literally gasped when I opened this page) Just to let you know I'm still alive - caught up in life and the winter blues.

Do I know how that kitten feels!
